CELEBRATE (2020) is a contemporary reinterpretation of La cage aux fauves by André Derain, one of the founding masters of Fauvism.
In this vibrant mixed-media composition, Audrey Néron transforms the original scene into a lush, emotional tableau where figures merge, dissolve, and reappear through layers of expressive mark-making.

Bold strokes of color pinks, greens, violets, and luminous blues intertwine with gestural linework, producing a dynamic tension between figuration and abstraction. The result is a sumptuous, dreamlike landscape infused with movement and narrative energy.

Part of the Visual Poetry Series, this artwork showcases Néron’s ability to reinterpret historical imagery while imprinting it with her own visceral, contemporary sensibility.

Artist Statement

“In my practice, I reinterpret iconic themes and atmospheres that recur across art history often epic, emotional, and symbolic. Inspired by painters from another era who share a similar narrative instinct, I continue the conversation through a modern lens.

I alter, distort, or replace characters with faces and energies from my own tribe, hijacking the story through appropriation.
This series explores the fine line between figuration and abstraction, seeking to extract the essence of the subject and transcend emotion.”
